West Oakland, a district in Oakland, California, is in the northwestern part of the city, west of Downtown Oakland, south of Emeryville, and north of Alameda. The area is situated on the water's edge close to the eastern terminus of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge and the Port of Oakland. It's 13 feet above sea level (4 m).

West Oakland was originally part of Rancho San Antonio, a Mexican land grant that was given to Luis Maria Peralta in 1820. The first European settlers in the place were Horace Carpentier, Edson Adams, and Andrew J. Moon, who leased land from Peralta's son Vicente in the 1850s. In 1863, the San Francisco-Oakland railroad was completed, linking downtown Oakland with the ferries of San Francisco Bay. West Oakland welcomed a resurgence in population after 1869, when the transcontinental railroad arrived there.

Many small and medium-sized businesses and residences in West Oakland were constructed in the 1880s and 1890s to serve the growing population of European Americans, African Americans, Portuguese, Irish, Mexicans, Japanese, and Chinese.
