Upper and Lower Dimond
This residential area at the foot of the Oakland Hills is known for its vibrant Latino community and laid-back attitude.
The Dimond District of Oakland is located between Dimond Avenue and 35th Avenue, just north of 580 (MacArthur Freeway). While most of the area is residential, MacArthur Boulevard serves as the main drag for businesses and restaurants in Lower Dimond.
In what is now known as Dimond Canyon, Dimond was once a completely separate community from Oakland. Formerly home to fruit orchards, timber groves, and even German beer halls, the Dimond District is now home to murals, taquerias, and a bustling business district. Dimond gained the nickname "Little Germany" in the early 20th century. In fact, German beer, food, and entertainment are still staples at the modern-day Oaktoberfest.
Several of Oakland's neighborhoods, such as Oakmore, Glenview, and Lincoln Highlands, are bordered by the Dimond Business District. A wide selection of shops, dining options, and other amenities are available. Locally owned and operated community stores like Oaklandish and mom-and-pop eateries like the wildly popular French bakery La Farine and local coffee shop Hive can be found here alongside chain stores like Safeway, CVS Pharmacy, and Peet's Coffee & Tea. Southern Cafe, a "down home Southern eatery," has an unlimited food buffet and live jazz on Sunday nights. And it's worth noting that a Grand Lake Kitchen restaurant has recently opened nearby. Every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., dogs are welcome on the patio. Try some of the local fare recommended in this Berkeleyside dining guide. Always call ahead to ensure a business is still open and what their hours are, as things can change quickly in this part of town.
Single-family homes, condominiums, and apartment complexes coexist in this Oakland neighborhood alongside more traditional architectural styles like the Mission Revival and Midcentury Modern.
Oakland's Dimond District is a great place to explore the city's past, present, and future. It is desirable because of its convenient location, variety of housing options, and proximity to services and entertainment. The area is well served by public transportation, with numerous bus and transbay bus lines passing through, as well as a carpool pick-up spot at Montana and Fruitvale, direct bus service to the Fruitvale BART station, and quick and simple access to Interstate 580.
