Fruitvale
A wide variety of Mexican cuisine, including Oakland's renowned street-style tacos, can be found in Fruitvale. In Fruitvale, many businesses are run by families who have run the same establishments for decades or even centuries.
Fruitvale is located just east of Lake Merritt, and is easily accessible by BART. The neighborhood is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and businesses, including many family-owned establishments. The area was once home to numerous apricot and cherry orchards, hence the name "Fruit Vale," which was first used in the late 19th century. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Fruitvale played a pivotal role in the Chicano Movement. Today, almost half of Fruitvale's residents are of Hispanic descent, and the area around International Boulevard has "a solidly preserved culture and village-y vibe" (Visit Oakland). As a result, the neighborhood plays host to a number of annual cultural celebrations, such as a Cinco de Mayo parade and a Dia de los Muertos festival.
International Blvd is where most of the area's restaurants and stores can be found. You can find anything you need, from restaurants serving Mexican cuisine to those serving up slices of pizza. Next to the Fruitvale BART station is the mixed-use development known as Fruitvale Village. Apartments sit alongside insurance offices, a library, and a variety of restaurants.
There are more places to eat and shop, such as fruit stands and grocery stores, to the north of Fruitvale. Craftsman, Victorian, bungalow, and multi-unit buildings are just some of the architectural styles represented in the Fruitvale neighborhood. The area itself is a mosaic of hustling city streets and peaceful residential avenues.
The O transbay bus will take you to San Francisco, and the Fruitvale BART station is located at 35th Ave and East 12th St. Culture and history abound in Fruitvale. It's a vibrant neighborhood with lots of murals and lots of people. It's easy to get around and find what you need in Fruitvale, making it a desirable place to live.
